By Patrick Bober, Managing EditorEssex County sheriff’s officers made a routine motor vehicle stop last week that resulted in a drug-dealing suspect being found with $3,573 in cash and approximately $5,000 worth of narcotics, according to officials.
On the evening of March 3, Officers Giuseppe Forgione and David Cohen were assigned to a seatbelt enforcement detail at Mill Street and Union Avenue. At 5:30 p.m., they observed a 2001 Acura TL with illegally tinted windows and a plastic cover obstructing the rear license plate, according to Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
The officers pulled over the vehicle and the driver, Efrain Nieves, 31, could not produce a certificate of insurance. The officers also reported the strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from the car when the driver rolled down his window.
After being questioned by the officers regarding the smell, Nieves reportedly told them he had been smoking marijuana in his car earlier in the day. He was patted down for weapons and told the officers he had no other drugs in his possession, voluntarily allowing them to search his car, according to police.
When Nieves opened his trunk, Forgione found an unzipped black leather pouch containing cash. Further inspection of the pouch revealed $3,573 in cash, mostly in $10 and $20 bills.
