Patrick Bober, Managing EditorA Newark man was found dead in Belleville near the Newark border on Jan. 4, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Daniel Mejia, was found unresponsive and under suspicious circumstances in a parking lot at 2 Honiss Street at 5:06 a.m. Mejia did not live far from where he was discovered and had only socks on his feet.
His death was not immediately ruled a homicide, pending an autopsy, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was still unclear, according to officials, whether Mejia died at the location or if his body was dumped there. A preliminary observation of the body found some trauma.
A day later, after an autopsy, police ruled the death a homicide, citing a bullet wound to the head as the cause. Because the investigation is ongoing. The Prosecutor’s Office and Belleville officials refused further comment.
