By Roman J. Uschak, Staff WriterLast week’s Belleville Board of Education meeting saw the informal introduction of incoming Superintendent of Schools Joseph Picardo, who will assume his new position on April 9.
Picardo was in the audience at the school board’s Feb. 22 meeting held in the Belleville High library.
“I was just supposed to be a bystander tonight,” said Picardo as he made his way to the front of the library to address the assembly of more than 30 individuals. “I’m excited to be here, and I look forward to coming on board.”
He then quipped that he would go to the back of the room and be quiet.
Picardo has spent the last eight years as Assistant Superintendent of the New Milford school district. He will succeed Deborah Perri, who has served as Belleville’s interim superintendent since last spring when the contract of her predecessor, Mel Persi, was not renewed.
Board President Joe Longo went over the selection and hiring process for the new permanent superintendent using computer-generated slides on an overhead screen.
The advertisement by the New Jersey School Boards Association, which assisted the district in its superintendent search, explained that a doctorate for the position was not required. It was still displayed on one slide in red letters that the interim superintendent was not eligible because she did not possess a doctorate.
Perri could be heard to say from her seat that she was “appalled,” although she was later praised by members of the public for her efforts in the last year.
