BHS wrestler Colon has good State tourney run

Belleville High School varsity wrestler Justin Colon had a good run at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Colon, a 112-pound sophomore, won in the preliminary round before losing in the pre-quarterfinals on March 5.
Colon returned the next day and remained alive with a victory in the wrestlebacks first round, but was then eliminated in the wrestlebacks second round.
Colon qualified for the NJSIAA tournament for the second consecutive season.
The BHS wrestling team finished the season with a 14-13 record.
The Bucs lose just two wrestlers to graduation and will have 12 returning lettermen for next season.
“We are hoping to be competitive next season with a junior-aged team and then are hoping to be one of the better teams in the area, in two years with a senior-aged team,” said BHS head coach Joseph Nisivoccia.
In addition to Colon, the Bucs boasted other standouts this season.
Senior 103-pound Oscar Cabrera came up from junior varsity last season behind Colon. This year Cabrera finished the season with a record of 24-12 with 14 pins. He won the Newark Academy Quad championship, placed fourth at the Elizabeth Minuteman Classic Tournament and placed fifth/sixth at the Middletown Christmas Tournament.
“Oscar was instrumental in the Belleville wrestling team, winning several close matches which allowed us to finish the season with a winning record,” said Nisivoccia.
Colon, who served as team captain, finished the season with a 36-8 record with 24 pins and three major decisions. Colon finished the season as a second-team All-Super Essex Conference honoree, Middletown Christmas Tournament champion and Elizabeth Tournament champion. He finished in second place in both the Newark Academy Quad and in the Essex County Tournament. Also, he placed third in both the District 14 Tournament and in the Region 4 Tournament. In two years, Colon has put together a career record of 73-13 and is on his way to 100 wins.
Sophomore 152-pound Joseph Anello finished the season with a record of 17-11 with nine pins. Anello finished the season on a strong note as he was Belleville’s only District champion. He also was selected to the second team All-SEC, finished second in the Elizabeth Minuteman Classic Tournament, fourth in the Essex County Tournament, and finished in the top 8 of Region 4. In two years of varsity, Anello has compiled a record of 32 wins.
Freshman 160-pound Nick Fruncillo put together a first-season record of 13 wins with seven pins. He finished third in the District 14 Tournament and placed second in the Newark Academy Quad.
Senior 215-pound Chase Hamilton compiled a season record of 17-15 with 11 pins. He served as a captain and finished third in the District 14 for the second time. He also placed in the fifth/sixth position in the Middletown Christmas Tournament. Hamilton has 42 wins in his three-year varsity career.
Junior 145-pound Marc Corino finished with a record of 21-13 with 12 pins. He avenged two close earlier losses to a fine Nutley wrestler who he defeated in the District Tournament in the pre-quarterfinals. Corino finished first in the Newark Academy Quad, and fourth in both the Elizabeth Tournament and the District 14 Tournament.
Sophomore 119-pound Rick Gencarelli had a record of 18-16 with 12 pins. He finished in second place in the Newark Academy Quad, third in the Elizabeth Tournament and fourth in the District 14 Tournament.
Junior Michael Laboy finished the season at 14-17 with seven pins. Laboy was a 171-pounder who moved up to 189 14 times during the season in an effort to help the team. He won eight of the 14 matches he wrestled at 189. Laboy would have had a better record if he was able to stay at 171 throughout the season, said Nisivoccia.
