Head coach Ted Sochaski couldn’t be any happier with his Belleville High School boys’ varsity basketball team.
The Buccaneers recently have an 11-6 record and are 8-4 in their division.
“The team is playing well,” said the coach, whose squad had won four straight games as of Feb. 8.
Sochaski said the Bucs have been led by senior forwards Tommy Rosario and Julian Rodriguez.
“Tommy has been averaging 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds a game while Julian Rodriguez is averaging 12.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game,” said the coach.
In addition, the coach complimented the play of Keith Everett and Domonique Issac.
“Senior guard Keith Everett is averaging 8.4 points and junior Domonique Issac is averaging 9.1 points per game,” said the coach. “Keith was 6-for-6 from the free throw line against Arts in the fourth quarter to ice the victory while Domonique had a big game against Caldwell High with 20 points and four three-point shots during the game."
Similarly, the coach said Kevin Cabello has also led the way.
“Point guard Kevin Cabello has done a great job running the team,” said Sochaski, who commended the effort put forth by his entire squad. “What I am most proud of with this team is how well all the players get along. They like hanging out with each other. They are truly happy for one another. The team chemistry is so good that it makes my job a lot easier.”
Looking ahead, Sochaski said his team was focused on the upcoming state tournament.
“Up next for us is finding out what seed we will be for the state tournament,” said Sochaski.
Sochaski also talked about the team’s upcoming game against Nutley next Friday Feb. 17. The team is playing in honor of BHS graduate Lindsay Giordano, who has breast cancer.
“We are doing a Pink Out for Lindsay Giordano and we are asking people to come out and support her battle with breast cancer.”
Notably, the game versus Nutley will be at 8 p.m. while the girls’ varsity game against Nutley will be at 6 p.m.
