Belleville Third Ward Councilman Paul "P.J." Mac Donald passed away at his home on Jan. 12 after a long battle with cancer. Mac Donald, 69, who lived in Belleville nearly all his life, was also the president of the Belleville Irish American Association.
Mac Donald announced his candidacy for the Belleville Township Council at the Nutley Irish Taste of the Towns in October 2007, after he had served as Deputy Grand Marshal for the 2007 Nutley St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was ultimately elected to the Belleville council the following spring, where he succeeded the outgoing George Ritacco. It was not known who would take Mac Donald's seat on the council.
Mac Donald is survived by his wife, the former Janet Anne Boyd. Together they had three daughters in Colleen, Aileen and Sheila, along with six grandchildren in Allison, Gianna, Janet Pauline, Michela, John Connor and Katelyn. Mac Donald's Irish heritage came from both his maternal and paternal grandparents, who hailed from Tipperary, Donegal and Sligo in Ireland.
The eldest of five children born to Willis and Marie (Barnett) Mac Donald, he had three brothers in Ray, Greg and John, and one sister, Joan Czekalski. Mac Donald himself graduated from both St. Peter’s Grammar School and Belleville High School.
