By Roman J. Uschak, Staff WriterBelleville Township will host the first 9/11 Memorial Park Beefsteak next week. The March 12 event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 96 Bridge St.
Organizers received special dispensation from the Archdiocese of Newark, through St. Peter’s Church in Belleville, to host the beefsteak on a Friday during Lent, a day when Catholics are supposed to abstain from eating meat. Catholics who attend the all-you-can-eat event may substitute the following Saturday or another day to honor the traditional practice of abstinence.
“We have it in writing from the parish priest,” said Lou Messano of the 9-11 Committee, which is hosting the beefsteak with the approval of the township.
The original date for the beefsteak had been on a Thursday, but then the event was pushed back to a Friday. When it was rescheduled, it was done so without noticing that the new date fell on a Friday during Lent, which created a problem.
Thomas Grolimond, who oversaw Belleville’s 9-11 ceremony at the memorial park in September, said that Rev. Ivan Sciberras of St. Peter’s Church helped secure the dispensation. Grolimond said he went to see Sciberras and explained the situation to him, but actually had to plead with the pastor a bit.
“He wanted us to change the date,” said Grolimond.
Grolimond explained that flyers with the date of March 12 had already been printed and some tickets had been sold, which made it highly problematic to shift the date again.
