Belleville Post Suspected drug dealer arrested in Belleville

Essex County sheriff’s officers made a routine motor vehicle stop last week that resulted in a drug-dealing suspect being found with $3,573 in cash and approximately $5,000 worth of narcotics, according to officials.

Belleville Post Toscano father, son sentenced

The Toscano family murder case that began almost a year and a half ago came to a close last week in Superior Court, Newark.
Peter Toscano, who fatally shot his cousin, Jordan Voorhees, with a .38-caliber handgun in 2008, pleaded guilty on March 1 to an amended charge of aggravated manslaughter. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

High School Sports BHS wrestler Colon has good State tourney run

Belleville High School varsity wrestler Justin Colon had a good run at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Colon, a 112-pound sophomore, won in the preliminary round before losing in the pre-quarterfinals on March 5.
Colon returned the next day and remained alive with a victory in the wrestlebacks first round, but was then eliminated in the wrestlebacks second round.

Belleville Post 9/11 memorial beefsteak gains dispensation on Lenten oversight

Belleville Township will host the first 9/11 Memorial Park Beefsteak next week. The March 12 event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 96 Bridge St.
Organizers received special dispensation from the Archdiocese of Newark, through St. Peter’s Church in Belleville, to host the beefsteak on a Friday during Lent, a day when Catholics are supposed to abstain from eating meat. Belleville High School wrestler Justin Colon qualified for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament for the second straight season.

High School Sports BHS track teams enjoy fine efforts this season

The Belleville High School boys’ and girls’ indoor varsity track and field teams enjoyed fine seasons.
Sherece Shabazz and Vanessa Ackon sparked the girls’ team, which finished third overall at the Essex County Relay Championships and won its first track trophy in school history. The girls’ team also finished in fifth place at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 Championships.

Belleville Post Fire Department gains a $72,900 FEMA grant

The Belleville Fire Department recently received a $72,900 grant from the federal government to help purchase much needed supplies, including radios.
The grant is part of a federal effort that goes back to2001. The Firefighter Investment Response Enhancement, or FIRE, Act is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and awards grants directly to local departments which are best able to identify their greatest needs.

Joe Anello captured the 152-pound weight class to lead the Belleville High School varsity wrestling team at the District 14 tournament in Livingston on Feb. 20.
Oscar Cabrera, Justin Colon, Nick Fruncillo and Chase Hamilton also finished third in their weight classes for the Bucs, who placed fifth overall among the nine scoring teams. Bloomfield won the team title. Livingston was second; Montclair was third and Nutley fourth.

High School Sports BHS boys’ basketball team upends Nutley

Chad Barnes had 16 points and Tommy Rosario added 10 points and 15 rebounds to spark the Belleville High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 56-44 win over archrival Nutley on Feb. 19 in Nutley.
Justin Winchester also had 13 points for the Bucs, who won their second straight and reportedly improved to 3-15.
In the previous day, the Bucs topped West Essex, 66-59, at home. Keith Everett had 18 points, Winchester had 16 points; Barnes had 12 points and Rosario had nine points.
